TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES
Sir,–With reference to the recent discussion in your paper as to the “Burning of Moscow” in 1812, I am authorized by Count Rostoptchine’s grandaughter (Countess Tornielli, née Countess Rostoptchine) to say that, besides the self-destruction of his own magnificent palace near Moscow (evidence of which devoted act has already been given in your columns), there exists an autograph letter from Count Rostoptchine, presented by the family to the Moscow Museum, in which he frankly admits his responsibility for the burning of the city also.
Yours faithfully,
OLGA NOVIKOFF (née Kireeff).
Grand Hôtel du Louvre, Paris, Sept. 25.
